VIDEOMAPPING
THE OLYMPIC GAMES

PARIS 2024

19 days of competition. 32 sports. 125 Olympic records broken. 2,113 news organizations present. 11,000 hours of content produced by Olympic Broadcasting Services alone. Over half of the world’s population – that’s 4 billion people – engaged with the games in some format. An experience 100 years in the making.

For the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, key production partners Videlio and CTV tapped Superbien to create five chapters of visual content, each about 2.5 minutes long, to be projected onto courts, tracks, and fields of play. The visuals the Superteam produced were shown to spectators before events at 7 venues, supporting 17 Olympic and Paralympic sports. From artistic gymnastics to volleyball, track cycling to wheelchair basketball, these digital love letters were intended to not only get the crowds that much more excited, but to create a vibrant link between the highest levels of sport and French culture.

The themes of each chapter – Abstract Movement, Street Art, 1924 to 2024, Olympic Artistry and Abstract Lines – were clear from the initial brief but Superbien finessed the creative from its foundation. The Superteam wanted to present consistent and effective storytelling and in this case that meant embodying the ethos of the Olympic spirit and the pillars of the Games. To that end, because of the number of chapters, the timeline and the work required, the Paris and New York Superbien teams joined forces to get the work off the ground. Plus, with Paris hosting the Games for the second time in 100 years, digging into and showcasing the importance of French culture felt especially meaningful. Superbien approached each storyboard, review and animatic with elegance, reverence, vision and humor.

Technically-speaking the Superteam brought our requisite video mapping expertise to the project at large but most crucially to the formidable challenge of the variety of fields of play. With an array of shapes, colors, lines and graphics on the floors of different arenas and stadiums – not to mention the light pollution that live sporting events entail –  the question of how to make the content visually legible was top of mind. Through an extensive previsualization process, presenting to clients the 360 degree content in situ, Superbien’s motion design team was not only able to fine-tune the chapters so that they were most impactful but also manage client expectations with precision.

This project required a combination of artfulness, essential for weaving multiple, cohesive narratives, and technical mastery, necessary to execute these stories across so many venues. The combination was a direct echo of the Games themselves. Taking inspiration from so many examples of human excellence on a global stage made this unique and challenging opportunity a highlight for Superbien Studio. It was an honor to help celebrate potential, hard work and excellence at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and we couldn’t be more proud to have been a part of this historic event.
